DESIGN 166: DESIGN FOUNDATIONS

I was given three weeks to design and create a cardboard package for three stemless wineglasses in my introductory design class. This project was my first introduction to industrial design--in the course of three weeks, I learned to become accustomed to thinking in three dimensions and to adjust my design process to work with physical materials.
This was the result--made from a single piece of cardboard, my final package design allows for hanging and examining the wineglasses, but also keeps the wineglasses safe for transportation. Its single piece construction is also easily disassembled for recycling.

Restrictions:
- Final design must fit within a 16" x 32" sheet of E-flute corrugated cardboard.

The dimensions of the box allow the wineglasses to fit snugly inside, creating a flat surface that additional boxes can be stacked on.
The package can be easily picked up and moved.
This was a very early model of the concept that came to be my final design. I had toyed with a few other concepts before developing this one, but building this model was a "lightbulb" moment for me. I felt that this concept was more successful at combining form with function than any of my previous designs.
One thing that I felt was lacking from this particular model is three-dimensionality--aside from the front and the back, all of its faces are completely flat and rectangular. To remedy this, I built a similar model out of paper, and I found that this basic shape could be bent into the shape that can be seen in my final design.
Later iterations involved adjusting the dimensions of the box to accomodate the three wineglasses and devising a closure system to make the package more secure.
